LGBT Equality: One Step Forward, One Giant Step Back

On Wednesday, May 16, the U.S. House of Representatives took us a giant step backward. In a 222 to 205 vote, the House approved a measure that excludes LGBT persons, along with other underserved communities of immigrants and indigenous peoples, from the reauthorization of Violence Against Women Act.

According to MCC Executive Director, Ann J. Robison, PhD, “Of particular importance was that the president used the word ‘marriage’ in his support of LGBT equality.”

Montrose Counseling Center’s Anti-Violence program is the benchmark provider of GLBT-affirming services for victims/survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and hate crimes, and because April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we want to draw a parallel between the first two – sexual assault and domestic violence – with that of human trafficking.
